Biaxin Side Effects- PLEASE HELP :(? Hey All, I have recently been prescribed Biaxin, as part of the Prev Pack of Amoxicillin and Prevacid, for the bacteria H. Pylori. I must take these drugs twice daily for 14 days. I am half-way done today, but the Biaxin is damn near killing me! After I take this drug, within 40 minutes, I have the worst diarrhea. I also get so nauseaus and weak that I can't even stand up without practically falling to me knees. I have the worst metallic taste in my mouth- I feel like I've been sucking on tin cans or something. The drug is giving me terrible stomach cramps- worse than H. Pylori has ever done! I feel like the bacteria is getting a bit better, but these side effects I just can't stomach- literatly! I have no health insurance and because I was given the Rx at the ER, they will not switch out the drug to something else unless I go back! Is there anyway to minimize these side effects? I try to eat decently before I take the Biaxin, but it doesn't seem to help out! I have skipped a couple of doses because I was afraid of getting sick at my job! I didn't want to vomit or get the runs! I want to kill H. Pylori, but how much should I have to suffer through? I have seven more days left and the effects are minimizing! It also making me feel rapid heartbeat and very depressed! Help me please! Any ways to lessen the effects or to deal better would truly be appreciated! are NOT minimizing! I am up writing this right now because I am so ill, I don't want to lay down and start hallucinating from these pills!

tessaprn replied: "All antibiotics tend to have the side effect of diarrhea. So even if you do get it changed to another one the problem can still exist. Since you are halfway home I would probably finish the med out. Especially since you do not have insurance. Another antibiotic could be cheap but that doctor visit can be expensive. But, regardless of any cost if you feel the need to visit the ER, go. A hospital business office should work out a payment plan with you if needed. DO NOT skip any doses because if not taken as prescribed the condition will not improve. If I understood your post correctly you are already taking 2 antibiotics. That probably intensifies the diarrhea. Good luck and do visit the ER if you feel you need to."

eecummings87 replied: "Are the side effects supposed to be that severe? I'm having sympathy pains just reading that. I'm really sorry. I don't know much about this, but it sounds like you should call your doctor."

Biaxin: If you have ever used it, what side effects did you have? I have the typical metalic taste (I just ignore it) but I'm also having problems with aching and trouble sleeping. Anybody else have this too? (sigh) I'll be talking to the doctor today. Sounds like there may be a problem here. I also have depression and it's affecting that a bit too. I also keep getting a bloody nose, though I'm not sure it's at all related (but it's only happening since I've been on it)

My mouth taste like metal from clarithromycin (Biaxin), is there a remedy? So im on a second antibiotic due to the last one not doing the job. My doctor prescribed me Clarithromycin ( which is a generic form of Biaxin ). I knew one of the side effects is a "bad taste in the mouth", but i didnt remember it being this bad. I had taken arithromycin when i was younger and there was a taste similar but not as strong. Is there anything i can eat or drink that can help this awful taste? I welcome any suggestions.

Weetsy replied: "TRY CHEWING GUM"

A P replied: "I am also taking Biaxin and the taste is horrible. I feel like the more water I drink the worse it tastes. Orange Tic-Tacs work for a little while, as long as you have one in your mouth. Also some Altoids work too, but only if you are actually sucking on them. Good Luck!"

Can these be side effects of the antibiotics? It started as strep throat...? A week ago, I got a sudden severe throat ache. I went to the Doctor, and he said I had strep. He placed me on Biaxin and Claritin. He also thought I had a sinus infection. Finally my throat is better, but then I've been getting weird symtoms. Like first my arms and sides hurt. Then it went away. Then my neck and cheeks were hurting. Today its my head and cheeks, with like this nervousness, and dizziness. Any advice? He gave me Biaxin b/c I am allergic to any drug in the Penicillin family. He gave me Claritin b/c he thinks I need it for my sinuses.

shey l replied: "antibiotics can have side effects. they can make you have diareha or a yeast infection. i would talk to the doctor if things get worse. good luck"

Blah? replied: "Clarithromycin for strep throat? Not the usual regiment for this... Penicillin (i.m. injection once or tablets for 10days) or erythromycin (also for ten days) are the treatments that are most effective in preventing rheumatic fever/heart disease, which are possible after-effects of Strep throat. "The usual drug of choice in the treatment and prevention of streptococcal infections and the prophylaxis of rheumatic fever is penicillin administered by either the intramuscular or the oral route. Clarithromycin is generally effective in the eradication of S. pyogenes from the nasopharynx; however, data establishing the efficacy of clarithromycin in the subsequent prevention of rheumatic fever are not available at present." I know this is not exactly answering your question, but I'm tired of seeing avoidable sequelae to relatively common condition..."

Help, antibiotic side effects or...? This week I was put on the antibiotic Biaxin XL (aka clarithromycin) for my sinusitis. I've been researching it and about 6% of adults experience nausea, diarrhea, and an abnormal taste in their mouths. I am 19 years old so I think I qualify as an adult, and I have been having nausea and an abnormal taste in my mouth in the morning for the two days I've been taking the antibiotics. I take the pills before I go to bed with food, and in the morning I feel extremely nauseous and have a weird taste in my mouth. But this disappears by the afternoon. So my question is, even though only 6% of adults experience these side effects, is that likely what I'm experiencing? It's only been going on since I started the antibiotics. But I'm also worried it could be morning sickness? If I were pregnant it might be about 2 weeks or more, but I don't have any other symptoms. Help! And thanks for reading, everyone gets a thumbs up for answering!

Rachel A replied: "It's definitely a side effect. You may be a minority but it's definitely what you've got. Abnormal taste in the mouth is a very uncommon side effect and you can most certainly point to the drug you're on. Not much else causes something like that... only a few disease conditions but not pregnancy. The fact that it disappears into the afternoon also supports the drug because over time the pharmakokinetics are such that drug levels will be reduced over time and the cycle repeats when you take it again. Just make sure you finish the whole antibiotic regimen if you can tolerate the side effects and make sure you let your doctor know in the future that the drug wasn't tolerated well by your body. It's not an allergy, just an intolerance to clarithromycin."

Antibiotic side effects...? My daughter is 5 years old and got a throat infection over the weekend. She got her antibiotic and did really well the first day. She was about 90% better, but then the next day she started to get a high fever again. So I took her back to the doctor and he gave her another antibiotic (Biaxin). She is doing well on it but she is having dirrahea. She has to go almost everytime she eats. I know that this is a common side effect for an antibiotic but I want to do something to help her. I called the pharmicist and he said that it is common and nothing can be done unless it is really bad, and in that case her medicine would have to be changed again. Is there anything anyone can recommend for the diarrahea? I have already been keeping her on a light diet (which is difficult because she is very picky eater but still I try) and I have been giving her lots of fluids as well. Anything else that anyone can reccomend? Any advice is welcome. Thanks!

mamaof3inVA replied: "Antibiotics kill the good bacteria in the intestines, which causes the diarrhea. Try feeding your daughter some yogurt. It won't cure the diarrhea overnight, but helps put that good bacteria back in the gut. Also, the standard BRAT diet will help bulk up her bowel movements. Bananas, rice, apples and toast. Stick with whole grain bread. Hope she's feeling better soon."

Tata mom to Bri,Jake,Mike replied: "get some pedialyte or gatorade to help her stay hydrated and also i believe you should not be giving her the antibiotics on an empty stomach this could be causing the diarrhea, so if you are then you should start giving her something before you give the meds, hope this helps hope she feels better"

Can I smoke Marijuana while on Biaxin? I am currently taking biaxin for my pneumonia, but I just finished doing a course and I really want to get baked. Does anybody know if there are an side effects of this? Is there a toll free number I can call and ask?

What exactly is lung scarring, and is it serious? Doc says I have pneumonia. Have 5 week heavy dry cough. This week I've been coughing up clear froth about 3x/day. I think it's from post nasal drip caused by GERD - but no one seems to know. I've been taking Prevacid for 5 years, and upped the dossage for a few days, but it didn't help. This is 4th day on Biaxin, but I don't see any change. X-rays showed scarring and fluid on lungs (have no idea how serious this is). I also have hoarsness on occassion recently, but could be side effect of the Biaxin. Guess I'm most worried about the lung scarring, but sure would like this cough to just go away. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions on what this is all caused by?

luv2lotto replied: "My MIL had lung scarring and it was called Fibrosis, hers was caused from different long term bouts of pneumonia and working around chemicals her whole adult life. Fibrosis *can* be serious, it can make it difficult to breath because your lungs cannot expand properly or provide your body the necessary oxygen it needs. However, you need to talk with your doc about this so you know if it is serious or not, there are all kinds of reasons why your lungs would be scarred. Here's some links I found, but you can find a ton more if you do a search. Good luck! "

Steven W replied: "Hi,lung scarring is no different than scarring after say you skin your knee its a healing process our body goes through to repair damage. My mother has alot on her lungs due to bouts of T>B. when she was achild she is 66 and still going strong, the main thing is to get rid of that pneumonia and stay well.I hope the best for you!Be good."

I'm taking Biaxin for bronchitis. Can I have wine with dinner? Will alcohol have a negative effect on the medicine or will it still work? Will it result in unwanted or serious side effects? Replies from qualified individuals only, please. Thanks!

ice_princess replied: "I'm not sure about the wine - a glass should be alright - call the pharmacist sometimes they are more knowledgeable then Dr's My warning, start eating lots of yogurt... i took that last year and had the worst problem with recurring yeast infections..."

sherri s replied: "A glass of wine is fine. Alcohol hinders the antiobotics ability to do its job. So dont booze it up..lol"
